Lessons from the Front Lines: Start Up to Sustainability
Applying Strategic Planning Practices to Create a Sustainable Nonprofit
Presented by Liz Sutherlin, Executive Director Emeritus, HappyBottoms (Diaper Bank), EWS Consulting, Inc.

When a retired Pharma Exec meets a start-up Nonprofit Founder and learns low income children have no diapers, crazy things happen to fill a community need. This story shares how strategic planning, teamwork, collaboration, networking, persistence and resilience took a startup nonprofit from a woman with a dream to a reliable community resource for low income moms and babies.

Learn how:

  • Strategic planning created the foundation for the growth and sustainability of HappyBottoms;
  • Persistence and resilience helped overcome decision-making missteps;
  • Collaborations and partnerships were created to help accelerate the number of children served;
  • Leadership and accountability led to ongoing success;
  • Teamwork from a volunteer staff and a passionate board turned into an 8 person paid staff and thousands of volunteer workers;
  • Networking fueled fundraising success.

The January discussion will be led by Liz Sutherlin, emeritus executive director of HappyBottoms, the largest diaper bank in the Kansas City metropolitan area. After 30 years in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, Liz “re-invented” her career and became the leader of a start-up nonprofit. She recently launched a consulting business, allowing her to draw on the knowledge and insights gained from both experiences. In this case study Liz will share the “boots on the ground” perspective she gained on the nonprofit front lines and reflect on how her work in the for-profit sector influenced her approach.

As a benefit of membership, ASP members can attend First Mondays for free. Registration is required. Beginning this month, nonmembers will pay a $10 registration fee. All registrants will receive an email with connection information on the day of the discussion. You will also receive a link to the recorded version of the session as well as a copy of the slide deck/materials reviewed during the program.
