Communities of Practice: Government

Government organizations are vital to the quality of life we enjoy in this country and around the globe. The role of strategic planning and management are essential to governments at all levels: national, regional and local. Government workers and citizens depend on an understanding of government intentions to make management decisions and to make good choices at the polls. Strategic planning helps illuminate the path forward through a clear vision of the future and a description of the actions needed to make it a reality.

Collaborative Strategy in a Federated Environment
Article for Gov CoP
By Linda Parker Gates

On April 15, the ASP Government Community of Practice sponsored a webinar on collaborative strategy presented by Mike Morello and Nathan Crook. Both are currently in the role of Senior Advisor in Government Solutions at Tyler Technologies. The webinar, titled Collective Strategy in a Federated Environment, was introduced by Jon Desenberg of the MITRE Corporation. In the well-attended webinar, Mr. Morello and Mr. Crook discussed the characteristics of a federated environment and the many facets of developing collective strategy and execution in such an environment.

The speakers defined federated as collaborating with other agencies and departments toward developing a collective strategy and executing on it, and highlighted the need to understand where authority is situated in a federated environment. Collaborative strategy can be voluntary or can be dictated by laws.

Tara Jennings wrote on the Communities of Practice: Government wall: Our county is interested in doing a community survey specific to fire subscription and fire service. Does anyone have experience in this? If so, would you be willing to share some of the questions? What survey tool was used and how was the survey marketed or shared with the community? Thanks.
