Anyone who has ever been stuck in strategic planning purgatory knows two things: 1) Getting out is exhausting. 2) Many roads lead to hell. 

 

So rather than just buying some indulgences—that is, reading dense academic tomes on strategic theory—why not do something far more useful and way more fun? 

 

In this masterclass you’ll learn about and then learn to play ASK MATT, a gamified approach to stronger strategic plans.  No mere child’s play, ASK MATT is built on the science of conceptual systems.  Research in this field shows how stronger strategic plans don’t result from simply gathering more information, they result from better structuring what we know and what we don’t.  By the time this masterclass ends (assuming you are willing to stop!) you’ll be prepped to show your colleagues back home how they can make their next strategic planning session a heavenly experience.

Developing Leaders Using Team Insights

at Each Stage of Organization Maturity

 

Great leadership teams are not born.  Leadership teams become great by performing, observing, assessing, and feeding back insights to each other in ways that drive continuous improvement as their organization matures.  Many leadership teams are deprived of the opportunity to experience such growth and development because organizations where they work rely on broken performance appraisal and leadership development models.  Traditional annual performance reviews, for instance, become rote exercises in form completion, don’t provide enough depth, don’t adapt leadership goals to the level of organization maturity, and by assuming a one-size-fits-all ladder to individual leadership development, don’t help senior teams balance their skill set.  Even worse, the resulting feedback is often ignored, sapping the organization’s overall strategic management capacity.

 

This masterclass offers a superior approach to strategic leadership development and performance appraisals.  The approach is an easy to implement, proven system based on global research involving thousands of successful leadership teams over many years and at various stages of maturity.  Case studies reveal how rich feedback leads to genuine insights and improved behavior.  Participants will have the chance to practice applying key points to assess their own organizations and teams in light of their stage of maturity.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

Get to Oz by Making Better Strategic Decisions

 

Bad decisions are a fundamental reason why organizations don’t get down the road to the brighter future promised by their shared vision. Like Dorothy, who faced flying monkeys, cowardly lions and an impenetrable forest, we are called to understand and navigate a strange and threatening environment with insufficient information to know what’s ahead.  What’s worse, we get lost because we are wired and socialized in ways that lead to flawed decision making.

 

In this masterclass, we mine the growing body of knowledge being produced by behavioral economists, psychologists and sociologists on mental biases, traps, fallacies and errors that block making good strategic decisions.  We explore the effects of these traps, and show how to recognize them and avoid or mitigate them.  We present an evidence-based decision-making framework to use to reveal when a strategic decision is needed, formulate it, develop options, choose the least risky path, test it to see if it can be improved, and assure the decision is executed and achieves intended results. Finally, we consider how we can learn from our past decisions to improve future decisions.

He is current President of the Association for Strategic Planning and author of AHEAD: Strategy is the way to a better future.  Lee has facilitated strategic and business planning, provided implementation services, and counseled senior executives, Boards and teams in more than 50 business and non-profit sectors.

PM Masterclass #1: 1:30pm - 4:30pm


Using Gear Up to Develop Faster, Smarter Strategies

 

This masterclass puts participants on the fast track to using Gear Up, a clear, powerful strategy development method created by scholars at Stanford University and Harvard Business School.  Based on nine simple paradigms, each represented by a turning gear, Gear Up helps organizations churn out winning strategies and put in place the organizational supports necessary to ensure successful strategic execution.   More than a theoretical introduction, this masterclass presents concise, multi-industry examples, each drawn from a strategy development initiative launched in the past year.  These examples demonstrate how Gear Up is being used by real-world early adopters.  Class participants will also have an opportunity to apply Gear Up to their own organization, so they leave with a concrete vision of how to go to work after the session ends.

Incubating New Business Ideas

 

The ancient philosopher Lao-Tzu once quipped, "If you don’t change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” This maxim certainly applies to organizations that say they want to innovate, but then get caught by the inertia of their established business practices.  As a result, these organizations fail to allocate the time, attention, and resources needed to systematically explore new ideas, and they fail to generate the tenacity needed to identify potential winners.  In this masterclass, we explore common challenges to incubating new business ideas, evaluate the pros and cons of different incubation approaches, and learn how to set-up a benefit-producing business incubator/accelerator.  Because resources are perennially scarce, we pay special attention to Lean Startup principles.

Peak Performance and Creating Collaborations that Fit!

  

Historians tell us Napoleon was a successful general until, at Waterloo, he forgot a basic lesson: Don’t fight an uphill battle.  Similarly, many of us don’t realize that as we assemble team-based collaborations, we unwittingly force our collaborators into a preconceived mold of how they should work together.  In essence, rather than leveraging each individual’s natural collaborative style, we create for them an uphill battle.  Especially because so many outcomes in the strategic management life cycle now depend on high functioning collaborations, organizations can ill afford the miscues and missteps that invariably result from such inflexibility.  

 

In this masterclass we learn how to systematically understand our own instinctive work styles, to likewise understand the work styles of others, and to build the vocabulary needed to discover how we can best work together.  By the end of the class we will see how to harness our own natural strengths and and how others may a different set of collaboration needs, thus optimizing team-based performance.
